Objective: To determine the prevalence of Charcot triad, Reynolds pentad, and Tokyo Guidelines criteria and clinical outcomes among patients with cholangitis across different age groups.

Charcot pentad. Cholangitis is a potentially life-threatening (mortality 5-10%), acute bacterial infection of the bile ducts. Diagnosis is based on clinical findings and while imaging can be supportive, it is frequently non-diagnostic. A normal ultrasound does not rule out acute cholangitis.

Typical symptoms of cholangitis include fever, right upper quadrant pain and jaundice (Charcot’s triad) Signs of a systemic infection may be present including rigors, hypotension, confusion and tachycardia. When hypotension and confusion are present alongside Charcot’s triad, this is known as Reynaud’s pentad.

This clinical combination has been traditionally known as Charcot’s triad.
