Abstract. This chapter provides guidance on planning and conducting focus group discussions. It describes tasks in preparing for focus group research, such as training the field team, recruiting participants, developing questions for the discussion guide, and ethical considerations.

Focus groups must balance the goals of those conducting them with the participants’ interests. [1] Those executing the focus groups pick the focus and guide the conversation, but the group generates the data through its discussion. For me, the first step in conducting a focus group is having an evaluation design, and figuring out if a focus group is the right way to collect data towards indicators and objectives.
